Anti-Airbnb Sentiment in Montreal

We’ve seen first hand how condo owners can disturb the peace, when they rent their condo on a short-term basis without any regard to the people that actually live there as their home. Crazy guests having parties for a weekend, can be a nightmare for everyone else in the building. When this happens (and it does unfortunately), it’s not fun to deal with. Many of us have been there.

Airbnb = Short Terms Rentals

The numerous Airbnb horror stories also make the news on a regular basis these days. It cannot be easy being an Airbnb PR person. Airbnb clearly has a bad reputation in Montreal, and is synonymous with short term rentals. Even if you want to use Airbnb for long term rentals only, you can still get yourself in trouble with condo rules (we’ve heard of condo owners being fined for advertising long-term rentals on Airbnb)…That’s how bad it’s become.

There are owners or property managers who are selective with their “Airbnb” guests, and get to meet new people, while legally abiding with municipal laws and condo building rules. But, as the saying goes, “One bad apple spoils the whole bunch” and more often than not, when one incident happens, condo owners band together and vote to ban Airbnb outright. Maybe it’s not right for those who do things in a safe and respectful manner, but you cannot blame owners for trying to protect their condo building. In Montreal, pretty much all condo buildings have banned (or will ban) short-term rentals. Toronto, is also starting to head this way.
